IPM101, first post

I'm not entirely sure what is going on, I know I have about 50 hours of work to do and about 10 websites and extensions to do it on, it's a little overwhelming at first but I guess that is to be expected as I have never studied a course that is entirely online before.

What is a project?

  1. Projects are novel, they are not operations
  2. It has a definite scope, both in objectives and resources required
  3. It requires the balancing of time taken, cost, and quality of result
  4. Projects have an environment they exist within, including cultural, social, international, political, and physical aspects
What do project managers do?
  1. Communicate with everyone (90% of time), so need a communication plan
  2. Keep tabs on tasks and their progress, along with the people working on them
  3. Influence, what control mechanisms are operating on the project? As in company policies, culture, local laws
  4. Motivation, constant process using team building techniques, recognition and rewards (considering individual preferences)
  5. Negotiate with stakeholders, vendors, and customers
  6. Problem solving, identifying viable solutions, deciding what solutions to implement
Time, cost, scope; the three corners of the triple constraint triangle. We can accept changes, constrain changes, and attempt to create positive change (enhance) each dimension.
